Akujyo is used to describe the women who were immoral or wicked. But nowadays, it is redefined as women who are empowered and independent and dare to challengetraditional gender roles.
This series uses the image of geisha as inspiration to create six different akujyo characters, each of them to discuss issues faced by modern women, include patriarchy, victim-blaming, appearance standards, body shame, workplace discrimination, and slut-shaming.
These six characters all have a rebellious attitude towards the mentioned issues and dare to challenge traditional gender expectations. Just like the images of geisha were recorded through the ukiyo-e art print in the Edo period, this collection discusses issues through fashion design and create a gallery of the image of modern akujyo.
