HUAN XU

Corner of the wall in Chongqing

As urban areas of China develop, there is a constant conflict between the modern and traditional. As I explore the streets and alleys of China, I look to discover the nuances of ‘what was’ in and around the new standardized cities. The collection pays particular focus towards the modern colorful graffiti that adorn the walls of old traditional buildings. Through design and natural dyeing, I creat a harmony where I have produced textiles that represent old concrete (in parts) are adorned with bright, modern hues of color. These two conflicting elements ( old&new) are harmonized.
